Patricia Jang Being in school and dealing with papers and exams is hard enough, but not having any support or somewhere to go to hang out with people who understand your problems too is even harder. Finding a community that is going through the same things as you and understands the problems you are facing helps more than people think. Especially for those who are not from the area. Though we talked a lot about college aged students, there are clubs like these in high schools as well. I know a lot of these places usually have a target audience but they also help those who are not from that specific cultural background. In my case, I am not korean but I have met a lot of people in these places and it is always nice to know that there is a community to be a part of. I met many wonderful friends there. It is very important for people to feel that accompaniment, especially as a student, no matter what age.
Yeshi Chodon I truly believe that “Ethnicity” is just a word that describe where you came from, but before that we are all human being. It is very important to respect each other without looking at skin color. We need to treat others with love and care.
Junwei Liang My family and I immigrated to the United States when I was 15 years old. I knew how it felt when people came to a new country for education. People always struggle at the beginning because English is not their first language. Language is not the only problem we have; at the same time, we also need to learn the new culture, adapt the new environment and make friends with new people. Now I have been lived here for about seven years. I want to use my knowledge and experiences to help other people go through their tough time.
Michelle Nam Speaking another language besides their mother tongue is a difficult task. Being an immigrant or student can be a task. Everyone should treat others as the same like how they want to be treated. I’ve met many people and friends and they are great. It is great to help each other others out.
Jonathan Yi Growing up with cousins that were from Korea, I saw the hardships they had to face at first hand, and the disadvantages they came there way. I believe that everyone should be given fair treatment when it comes to social standards, and having foreign students feel more accepted and welcome, rather discriminating them.
